New Hampshire sets the pace again
New Hampshire lawmakers passed house bill 76, which does the unthinkable! It passes state money straight to Charter Schools, rather than sending it to local school districts to pass on to local charter schools. This basically eliminates the middle man, which is good. The funny thing about this law, is WHY WAS IT THE WAY IT WAS????? Prior to house bill 76, area Charter Schools had to depend on their COMPETITION to fund them!
Imagine being 9 years old and opening up a lemonade stand using a government grant. But, you have to depend on the 12 year old who lives on the next block to apply for the money and then give it to you in order to buy the mix and sugar! I know, I know, 9 year olds running lemonade stands shouldn't get government money to open up their own business...but should pea-brained burecrats attempting to run schools get millions of dollars?

Yeah, there goes New Hampshire leading the way again.
Hell, they were the FIRST state to have a governor who advocated nuclear weapons for the National Guard.
They were the FIRST state to enter the business of LOTTERY GAMBLING (effectively a tax on the poor). What's a government doing running a numbers game anyway? Sounds anti-libertarian to me.
They were last in one thing though, LAST in the country to have either a sales tax or a state income tax. Of course, that left no money for support of public education and therefore their schools became some of the worst in the country.
Oh yeah, and they were the FIRST (and only one I've ever seen) to have a STATE RUN liquor plaza located right on an interstate (I93 just before Manchester) and it's open 24/7. What's a state doing dealing alcohol? Sounds anti-libertarian to me.
New Hamphire is not a good example for very much of anything.
Even their state symbol (the one on the back of the state quarters), "the Old Man in the Mountain"'s FACE FELL OFF last year and Cheney wasn't anywhere near the place!

Anonymous, I would appreciate it if you would leave sources for your factual claims, that way we can fact check each other. Thanks.
But, for the record, I am certainly against state run liquor and state run lottery. I am against income tax....
Wait a minute, why are we talking about all of these different things here? The point of my blog is to discuss a specific point. The comments here should be simply about school choice, which is what this post covers. Can we discuss school choice?
